An Open Letter To My Grandmother (Sahm X Digital Legacy)

Dear Grandma,

I want to say thank you. I’m not quite sure where to begin, or if there are even enough words to truly express it. I hope you know how deeply loved, appreciated, and admired you are every single day. As someone who’s been so central in shaping my life, from before the time I even entered this world, there are so many things about you that I’m indescribably grateful for.

You radiate a constant kindness and warmth that I can only wish to emulate. Your unwavering openness of arms, heart, and mind, continues to amaze and inspire me. You are true beauty from the inside out, and when I imagine my future self, I always hope to be my own version of you.

As I continue to experience life, and walk in your footsteps through marriage and motherhood, I appreciate you now more than ever. You’ve not only been a careful listener, honest advisor, and proud encourager, but with your quiet confidence and steady hand, you’ve shown me what it means to lead a family with intention, strength, and so much love. These invaluable lessons you’ve taught me, are what I will be forever thankful for.

First, and above all, how to love and support both unconditionally and honestly. This means that acceptance, respect, care, and kindness are not based on expected returns. That there is room for loving others exactly as they are, and nurturing them to become their best selves. And that you can, and at times must, speak the hard truths, while providing a soft place to land.

You’ve taught me that true strength is feeling it all, but always finding the good and carrying that forward. It’s finding peace in continuing on, while letting your pain and your joy coexist. You don’t always have to understand why, and when in doubt, come together, laugh, and have faith.

You’ve shown me the value and power of patience. To allow those you love the comfort, security, and space to learn, grow, and make mistakes without judgement or criticism. And that slowing down to really pay attention, stand in awe, and let the moment linger is never a waste of time.

And lastly, that everyone is always welcome at the table. Because food is love, and love should be shared. So always cook more than you need, and feed everyone you can. No matter the occasion, no one leaves with an empty stomach, or feeling like they aren’t a part of the family.

Simply put, I am because you are. Thank you for instilling me with your wisdom, and inspiring me through your actions. I am honoured to be yours, and blessed that you are mine.

With love beyond measure,

Amy
